Preservation & Stewardship

Dedicated programs ensuring the Zion Cemetery remains a place of dignity, beauty, and remembrance for generations to come.

Our Commitment to Care

The Zion Cemetery Fund operates a comprehensive program of care that addresses every aspect of cemetery preservation — from regular grounds maintenance to the conservation of century-old monuments. Our approach is guided by best practices in heritage preservation and a deep respect for the families and individuals whose memories we safeguard.

Current Programs

Our five core programs work together to ensure comprehensive cemetery care

1

Grounds Maintenance Program

Our primary ongoing program focuses on the regular care of the cemetery grounds. This includes scheduled mowing throughout the growing season, tree care and pruning, drainage management to prevent waterlogging, removal of fallen branches and debris, and seasonal cleanup operations. We maintain clear pathways and accessible routes to ensure all visitors can navigate the grounds safely and comfortably.

2

Monument Conservation

Historic headstones and monuments require specialized care to prevent deterioration. Our conservation efforts include gentle cleaning using heritage-appropriate methods, re-leveling of settled or tilting stones, repair of damaged or weathered inscriptions, structural stabilization of fragile monuments, and documentation of monument conditions for ongoing maintenance planning. We follow conservation guidelines that respect the original materials and craftsmanship of each memorial.

3

Fence & Gate Restoration

The heritage entrance gate and perimeter fencing are defining features of the Zion Cemetery. Our restoration program ensures these structures remain structurally sound and aesthetically appropriate, preserving the historically significant stone pillars and wrought-iron elements that welcome visitors to the grounds. Regular inspections identify areas needing repair before damage progresses.

4

Landscaping & Beautification

Beyond basic maintenance, we invest in the long-term beauty of the cemetery grounds. This includes planting native Manitoba prairie flora that thrives in local conditions, seasonal flower arrangements at key locations, management of shade trees and ornamental plantings, and creating a serene, park-like atmosphere that provides comfort to visiting families and reflects the natural beauty of the surrounding prairie landscape.

5

Record Preservation & Digitization

In partnership with the Manitoba Genealogical Society, we are working to digitize and preserve all burial records associated with the Zion Cemetery. This includes creating comprehensive databases of interments, photographing and cataloguing every headstone, cross-referencing records with the Manitoba Name Index (MANI), and ensuring that genealogical researchers and family members can access this important historical information for generations to come.

Why Preservation Matters

Cemeteries are more than burial grounds — they are irreplaceable records of community history. Each headstone carries names, dates, and symbols that connect us to the people who built our community. Once lost, these records cannot be recovered.

Manitoba's harsh winters, spring flooding, and summer heat cycles create unique challenges for monument preservation. Temperature fluctuations cause stone to expand and contract, leading to cracking and spalling over time. Our proactive approach addresses these environmental challenges before they result in permanent damage.

Through careful stewardship, we ensure that the stories inscribed in stone continue to speak to future generations about the pioneers, families, and community members who shaped the Foxwarren region.
